Ian's Story

Life I'm still playing music,(for pleasure, not employment) but mostly jazz and classical these days. (Rock as a completely living thing sort of died around 1975 didn't it?) I finished a doctorate in cell and molecular biology several years back, now I work as a university researcher in the field of biophysics. I started college late, in my middle twenties, I did a degree in math and physical science. I hated math in school, slept right through it. You all thought I was stoned but mostly I was just ADD and bored, my mind was on Lennon, Santana and Hendrix, not old Peterson and square roots. Same thing with foreign language, it just bored me to death and I couldn't begin to memorize the genders. Now I work with math all day and study language for pleasure half the night, go figure. After years of constant effort, I'm approaching fluency in Russian, I got addicted to it somehow. Wouldn't all my old french teachers be shocked? I hope so, the bastards! Another surprising fact to anyone who remembers the young, longhaired, left-leaning me; I joined the Army National Guard to help pay for college though I'm out of it now. Also surprisingly, considering that I could hardly even talk to a girl in my school years, I've been married so many times I have rice marks on my f...Expand for more
ace. Well a few times anyhow, nearly always to nice jewish girls. I'm happily married now to a very lively Russian, how to describe her, Natasha crossed with Gracie Allen, rather tall, my own age, a great dancer, the progeny of two Soviet scientists, she's had a very interesting life and keeps mine interesting. I've two daughters and a son, all talented and interesting people, plus my wife's daughter. We live way out in the woods in Vermont, I built my own place and carved out a little "estate" consisting of several small ponds and a meadow, very bucolic. We're so far out in the country we meet moose in our driveway sometimes. What else? In school I was all skin and bones, from love of food, I'm now slightly too heavy. It would be worse but I play a lot of tennis, a great calorie burner. I used to be fanatic about downhill skiing but don't have the time to do that much now so I do more and more cross country skiing these days. It would be a waste to live in Vermont and not ski. Politically, from living in Vermont, I'm dead tired of the wacky left and of smug liberalism, (smug conservatism too which goes without saying). I'd call myself an angry moderate. I guess that's like being a "Militant agnostic": I don't know and you don't either. Enough already!
